DESIGN OBJECTIVE
When discussing with Voltron's operational manager to understand the objectives for developing the admin dashboard, I considered the need for data accessibility and reporting. The goals of the design I created are:
Real-time Station Monitoring
Ensure the Voltron team can monitor the status of each station in real-time.
Profitability Analysis
Identify revenue per station and area, allowing for the determination of profitable and non-profitable stations.
Financial Performance
Display the total revenue and net income of Voltron's business for a comprehensive financial picture.
Data Export Functionality
Enable users to export data from the dashboard for further analysis and report generation.
UNDERSTAND THE USER'S NEEDS
To prioritize user needs and ensure a user-centered design approach based on our findings, I have created user stories. These stories serve as brief descriptions of the goals and expectations of the Voltron team when utilizing the dashboard.
🙋🏼♀️
I want to be able to manage all charging stations so that I can monitor their status, whether they are active, undergoing maintenance, or out of order.
🙋🏻
I want to know the revenue generated by each operating station in a specific area, so that I can accurately report the company's profits either on a daily, weekly, monthly, quarterly, yearly basis.
🙋🏿♂️
I want to export or print all data or select specific data, so that I can send it as an insightful report to use as a benchmark for making decisions.
🙋🏻
I want to view station details to get essential station information and see all the activities happening at the station.
DESIGN STRATEGIES
Information Architecture
Developing a New Information Architecture Inspired by Voltron Existing Dashboard.
User Interview
Understanding Staff requirements to streamline and simplify existing workflows.
Align with Brand
Create a visual design that aligns with the Voltron mobile app and the Voltron brand.
User Testing
Testing the design and interactions with users to pinpoint optimal solution.
INFORMATION ARCHTECHTURE
This is the information architecture of the admin dashboard being developed. However, critical development is needed in the Station and Reports menus, which I have highlighted in the structure below.
THE SOLUTION & FINAL DESIGN
After discussing, testing the prototype, and ensuring that the Voltron admin's needs align with the design solution I proposed, the final design is now ready to be developed by the engineering team based on the final prototype I created.
Solution 1
👷🏾
How might we design a central dashboard that allows users to monitor the real-time status (active, under maintenance, out of order) of all charging stations?
✨
The dashboard have a widget to displays real-time status information for active, under maintenance, and inactive stations, with a summary view via a pie chart, while a table lists each station's location, total stations, and daily EV Charge users, categorized by status for easy access.
Solution 2
👷🏻♀️
How might we create a system that tracks and reports the revenue generated by each operating station in specific area, enabling users to analyze profitability on a daily, weekly, monthly, quarterly, yearly basis?
✨
The dashboard provides real-time financial data for Voltron, including total revenue, expenses, and income, with detailed views by area and time period. Users can track revenue movement, compare income and revenue for profitability, and identify stations with losses for potential deactivation.
Solution 3
👷🏿♂️
How might we enable users to export or print all data, or select specific data, so that they can generate and send insightful reports as benchmarks for decision-making?
✨
Users can export documents as PDFs or print them, customizing the data by total, time period, and year. The system generates insightful, password-secured reports, simplifying mandatory report preparation for CEO-level discussions and analysis.
Solution 4
👷🏾
How might we create a station details page to provide users with detailed information about the station and allow them to see all real-time charging activities happening there?
✨
The details page shows detailed information about the station. Additionally, users can check the real-time charging status and view summaries of total customers, duration, energy delivered, and total revenue. Users can also view the total energy delivered and the total number of users who charged their electric vehicles at the station.

IMPACT
Station Solution Impacts
Saves Voltron team time by automating station status checks.
Improves visibility with organized lists showing active, under maintenance, and inactive stations.
Enables faster decisions with clear pie charts summarizing station statuses.
Empowers users with real-time charging status and fuels data-driven decisions for station operators, promoting a more informed and sustainable EV experience.
Finance Solution Impacts
Real-time widget shows key financial data (revenue, expenses, income) for immediate awareness.
Get detailed reports by day, week, month, quarter, or year to track financial performance across locations and stations, identifying high-performing areas and strategic opportunities.
Helps Voltron decide if stations need relocation, maintenance, or deactivation.
Export data to PDF or print for efficient report creation.
LIMITATION & OBSTACLE
For older EV machines, around 19 units, the software integrated with the hardware lacks features that enable the system to signal and provide information if there is a malfunction or issue with the machine.
Therefore, these Charge machines cannot be integrated with the dashboard application. In this case, the Voltron team must perform regular manual checks.
