veetrace APP
The VeeTrace app operates on a specialized device with its own operating system. This device connects directly to an advanced network and database, eliminating the need for WiFi or mobile data. Its primary function is to retrieve detailed information from vehicle license plates. Unlike a standard phone, it can't be used for general communication.
ASSIGNMENT
To develop a vehicle number Identifier Mobile App to help police identify vehicle owners for stolen, criminal, or Illegally parked cases.

2023
As part of privacy measures for this official app and in line with the limited publication agreement for this product, this case study has been modified. Brand names, product names, colors, design styles, and key features have been adjusted, but the use cases and user needs remain similar.
PROBLEM
One of the problems frequently encountered by our clients in the field is the difficulty in identifying vehicle owners or the legal status of vehicles. This occurs when their team finds motorcycles or cars parked in no-parking zones, suspected of being stolen, or used for criminal activities. They struggle to immediately determine whether the vehicle number is registered and legal, or if it's using a fake license plate. This process is time-consuming as they have to send the data to the relevant team for verification.
Current Situation
Possible Solution
Action
Users must take photos with their phones, then send them to another team for verification. The results have no clear timeframe, sometimes taking long, sometimes quick.
Develop a device or platform connected to a vehicle number database, with the ability to search and display specific vehicle numbers.
Create an app that allows users to scan or type a vehicle number and display results.
THE GENERAL OVERVIEW
This is a general overview of the process my team and I follow in developing software that functions as an operating system to run the VeeTrace program. We collaborate with hardware vendors to ensure the design and layout are aligned and optimized for the screens they provide.
UNDERSTAND THE USER'S NEEDS
🙋🏻
I want to quickly and easily access vehicle owner data so that I don't need to request verification from another team.
🙋🏿♂️
I want to know if the vehicle I've found has a registered license plate so that I can immediately determine whether the vehicle is genuine or fake.
THE CHALLENGE
👷🏾
How might we enable users to access vehicle owner data quickly and independently, minimizing the need for inter-team verification?
👷🏻♀️
How might we provide immediate verification of a vehicle's license plate registration status to help users determine its authenticity?
THE JOURNEY
I visualized the user's journey to achieve the desired outcome, aligning with the success flow when using the VeeTrace device in the field. Below is the start-to-finish success flow for when a user wants to identify a vehicle's license number.
DESIGN STRATEGIES
User Workflow Analysis
Understand the user's actual tasks and working conditions during their duties, and identify the obstacles that hinder their efficiency.
Friendly Interface Design
Create a screen layout that is optimized for indoor use and supports user mobility, ensuring it is tailored to specific tasks and workflows.
Streamlined Legality Verification
Design a results page that enables users to quickly and easily verify the legal status of a vehicle, minimizing unnecessary steps.
Accessible Design
Develop design components and select font sizes that ensure readability and accessibility, considering the user profile and specific needs.
THE IDEATION PROCESS
To brainstorm and explore a variety of solutions for addressing the challenge, I begin by sketching out ideas, which I then convert into low-fidelity digital wireframes. This approach helps me review and refine my choices before advancing to high-fidelity designs.
In the initial development of the high-fidelity UI and for user validation and presentations, my team and I chose a light mode design. However, for the final version, users requested a dark mode design, which we then implemented for the final product.
THE DESIGN SOLUTION
Instant Vehicle Lookup
Users can scan or enter a vehicle number to retrieve owner and vehicle details on the VeeTrace device.
License Plate Verification
The feature checks if the vehicle's plate is officially registered, flagging invalid or fake numbers.
Search History and Bookmarks
Track previous searches and save important results with additional features like history tracking and bookmarks.
Secure Authorized Access
Only high-level users can access the device, requiring a passcode generated by the admin through the dashboard.
This is the flow when using the scan feature to verify a vehicle number, and in this case, the vehicle is verified and legitimate.
The feature allows vehicle numbers to be verified manually by typing them in.
With the history feature, all search results are recorded by the system and can be accessed later.
The bookmark feature enables important numbers that require follow-up to be saved.
Users must log in with their user ID along with a passcode obtained directly from a high-level position in charge of the dashboard.
This is the flow if the scanned vehicle number is not verified and is suspected of being a fake.
FINAL UI SCREEN
The UI for this app is specifically designed for users who mostly operate outdoors, with high mobility and active movement. Font size, type, color, buttons, and shapes are optimized to ensure ease of use while on duty.
The font color and readability are designed with accessibility in mind, helping users read information without difficulty. The app's contrast is fully supported by the device hardware, providing clear visibility even in very bright conditions.
LIVE PROTOTYPE
Please explore this live prototype to experience the finalized flow and design, which have been implemented as the final version.
App in Testing Phase
As of the case I included in my portfolio, this app is still in the testing phase using dummy data. The user interface is finalized, but the device hardware, backend system, and database are still being developed until the product is ready for widespread use across all relevant institutions.
